Going From Manicure to Manicure

Healthy looking hands and nails not only make us feel great, they also communicate a lot to others about our health and habits. However, too many manicures and nonstop polish not only stain nails over time, they can also thin nails and damage cuticles, reducing your nails’ most critical role: providing protection against infection. Every month or so, aim to go “au natural” and skip the manicure, moisturize your fingers and give your nails some room to breathe.

By Dr. Katie Rodan

I recently saw a patient in my office who was complaining of tiny, rough, slightly red bumps on the back of her upper arms. She said she’d had this condition since she was a child, and although it was slightly better; it still bothered her and made her self-conscious about baring her arms.

Sound familiar? You may know it as “chicken skin” or “goose flesh,” but this condition, formally called Keratosis Pilaris (KP), is actually estimated to affect between 50-80 percent of adolescents and approximately 40 percent of adults.

But as widespread as it is, most people are too embarrassed to seek treatment. As a derm, I’ve heard every self-treatment idea in the book, from people trying to scratch the bumps off to attempting to exfoliate them away. Unfortunately, neither work and, more often than not, make the situation worse.

For best results treating KP, avoid aggressive exfoliation and make sure to keep the area hydrated with a moisturizer that helps regulate skin cell proliferation. For a more proactive treatment approach, try a moisturizer that contains urea and/or salicylic acid. When used regularly, it can be very effective at improving KP.

So reduce the urge to scratch, and instead, bump up your moisturizer … soon enough you’ll dare to go bare!

Myth: A Base Tan Can Prevent a Sunburn

This time of year we hear time and again about people working on their “base tan” before summer arrives, thinking that catching a few rays now will protect their skin from getting burnt throughout the summer. But, to set the record straight, there is no such thing as a base tan. Any amount and type of sun exposure damages skin, and the damage is cumulative, so a little here and there all adds up and contributes to premature aging and an increased risk of developing skin cancer. As you prepare to bare, your safest bet is to fake a glow and protect from head to toe.

As a true California girl, I love looking bronzed and always maintaining that sun-kissed glow year-round. Since the sun isn’t always shining in San Francisco, I need the help of one of my favorite Rodan + Fields products, ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides in Bronze. In my experience, having a great bronzer in your makeup routine is vital to creating a youthful glow. I love applying the bronze peptides over my regular foundation to create a fusion of coverage and color. I adore that this product is mineral based, since I can really see my skin glow through the powder, as opposed to most bronzers that hide the skin you work so hard on.

For an added boost, I use ESSENTIALS Moisturize with Melaslow™ under the mineral peptides to create that “just got back from vacation” glow. And for on-the-go color, I dip my kabuki brush into the powder and “lock and load,” applying the bronze peptides to highlight my cheek bones, décolletage and even arms throughout the day. Since the peptides contain RFp3 technology and mineral-based sunscreen, I know my skin is getting what it needs to battle the day.

DHA

Derived from glycerin, DHA (which stands for dihydroxyacetone) is considered the most effective ingredient for creating a safe, temporarly tanned effect to the skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. DHA reacts with the keratin protein in the dead top layer (stratum corneum) of your skin to produce the color, and the reaction is similar to the browning effect seen on a cut apple. The duration of the browning look can vary depending on how quickly dead skin cells are shed but can be extended with the use of moisturizers that help regulate skin cell proliferation. But be aware that DHA and the tanned appearance of skin that it produces do not protect your skin from the sun’s rays, so be sure to wear a broad spectrum SPF sunscreen every day over your “tanned” skin.

DHA can be found in Rodan + Fields® ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tan.

Dormin

When skin cells are stressed due to harsh climates or other environmental aggressors, cells go into overdrive and rush to the surface before they are fully mature. The result is increased cell pile up, creating skin that is uncomfortable, dry, flaky, tight and irritated. To de-stress your frenzied cells, we like dormins.

These plant bulb extracts, found in dormant narcissus bulbs, protect fragile flowers through harsh winters and do the same for your skin. By normalizing the lifespan of healthy cells, skin is more resilient and comfortable, and when used along with ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tan, can improve the look and extend the length of your faux glow.

Dormin (as RF-Dcell) can be found in Rodan + Fields® ESSENTIALS Daily Body Moisturizer and ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tan.
