Lip Service

If you’re ignoring your most communicative feature when it comes to your skincare, you’re just paying lip service to your anti-aging efforts. Lips may be the last thing on your anti-aging list, but they’re often the first thing that people notice about your face, even before you ever open your mouth.

From the puffy pouts of Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez to the elegantly modest mouth of Kate Middleton, despite cultural differences and changing social trends, lips take the lead when it comes to your face.

Why? Because their primary purpose is pretty darn important: to provide you with the nutrition you need to survive. They are the focus of your face and even when they’re silent, they are telling a story about your health, your mood and your age.

Regardless of differences in size or shape, young lips are often characterized by a firm and full structure, a soft and smooth surface, a crisp vermillion border (the defined line between the edge of the lip and the rest of the facial skin) and a naturally moisturized appearance.

Over time, aging and environmental exposure diminishes these attributes. To make up the difference, we turn to lipstick for definition, balms for moisture and even invasive injections for fullness and firmness.

But it doesn’t have to be this way … there are options for getting the lips of your youth back that don’t involve a visit to your dermatologist or breaking the bank. Tune in to Derm RF this month for the full scoop on getting a perfect pout.

Sincerely,

Your Derm RF Team

Employee Favorite

By Katelyn Jang, Product Manager at Rodan + Fields Dermatologists

I haven’t had a thorough physical in ages—I never thought I really needed one.  I couldn’t believe it when my doctor called me with the news:  “Katelyn, you are Vitamin D deficient! “ My doctor proceeded to prescribe me with Vitamin D capsules and asked me to get plenty of sunshine. That was my doctor’s advice.  Wait, did I hear that right? Plenty of sunshine?

Basking in the sun isn’t my favorite thing to do—I never go anywhere without putting on ample amounts of sunscreen—and reapply throughout the day, rain or shine. I am trying to protect my skin from sun damage, cancer and premature aging, and I’ve learned from the best … Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields.

So I get my Vitamin D the healthy way … with the Maximum D3® Vitamin D3 supplement. I started taking one pill every week and just two months later, my Vitamin D levels are within the right range. With the right diet and supplements, I can make sure that I don’t have to sacrifice my skin while getting a healthy level of Vitamin D!

Plus One, Minus One

With the New Year upon us, no doubt you have set several power resolutions. And while some of those resolutions are long-term goals that will come over time, it’s the small, daily changes we make that lead to  results. And when we make micro commitments and keep them, we feel less overwhelmed by our goals and are more likely to see results in the long run that exceed our expectations rather than fall short of them.

For example, let’s say your New Year’s resolution might be to look 10 years younger in 2012. Now what? Did you know that just one extra application of sunscreen a day can mean over a thousand fewer hours of harmful sun exposure (the leading cause of skin cancer and a key cause of skin aging) in a year’s time?

So, this year we recommend taking a plus one, minus one approach. Simply resolve to do something skin friendly and drop something harmful to your skin each day. Like add an additional layer of sunscreen at noon and ditch the straw from your glass of water (leads to accelerated wrinkles around your mouth). Tune in to Derm RF this month to find out how you can make 2012 your best looking year yet by making small sacrifices and mini amends. It’s all about “in with the good and out with the bad!”

What are your skincare goals for 2012? We want to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Your Derm RF Team

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
