DHA

Derived from glycerin, DHA (which stands for dihydroxyacetone) is considered the most effective ingredient for creating a safe, temporarly tanned effect to the skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. DHA reacts with the keratin protein in the dead top layer (stratum corneum) of your skin to produce the color, and the reaction is similar to the browning effect seen on a cut apple. The duration of the browning look can vary depending on how quickly dead skin cells are shed but can be extended with the use of moisturizers that help regulate skin cell proliferation. But be aware that DHA and the tanned appearance of skin that it produces do not protect your skin from the sun’s rays, so be sure to wear a broad spectrum SPF sunscreen every day over your “tanned” skin.

DHA can be found in Rodan + Fields® ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tan.

Dormin

When skin cells are stressed due to harsh climates or other environmental aggressors, cells go into overdrive and rush to the surface before they are fully mature. The result is increased cell pile up, creating skin that is uncomfortable, dry, flaky, tight and irritated. To de-stress your frenzied cells, we like dormins.

These plant bulb extracts, found in dormant narcissus bulbs, protect fragile flowers through harsh winters and do the same for your skin. By normalizing the lifespan of healthy cells, skin is more resilient and comfortable, and when used along with ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tan, can improve the look and extend the length of your faux glow.

Dormin (as RF-Dcell) can be found in Rodan + Fields® ESSENTIALS Daily Body Moisturizer and ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tan.

Dimethicone Beads

These tiny beads deliver huge results when it comes to exfoliation. Unlike larger or irregularly shaped particles, these smooth operators produce an effective and even removal of dulling dead cell buildup, while depositing the active ingredient dimethicone— recognized by the FDA as a skin protectant. Find dimethicone beads in Rodan + Fields® ANTI-AGE Daily Cleansing Mask.

Kaolin clay

Known for its pore-refining benefits and ability to draw oil and dirt from the skin, kaolin clay is also a natural exfoliant. Dulling dead skin cells adhere to this mineral-rich clay and are then washed away – just like a piece of tape lifts lint off a black shirt. You can find pore-refining kaolin clay in Rodan + Fields ANTI-AGE Daily Cleansing Mask.

Retinol

We hear so much about retinol and Retin-A and how great they are for our skin, but what’s the difference and what do they do? Both are part of a large group of over 2500 chemicals called retinoids, all of which are related to Vitamin A. Retinol is a topical, over-the-counter retinoid, while prescription retinoids include tretinoin (Renova, Retin-A), adapalene (Differin), and tazarotene (Tazorac). Be aware of assuming that “more is better” when it comes to retinoids. For nonprescription retinoids, more important than the percentage alone is the delivery system and package stability (retinol degrades heavily in the presence of oxygen and light), and other ingredients the retinol is paired with. If using a prescription retinoid, start slowly and follow the manufacturer’s directions; many people start too quickly, experience negative side effects (redness, flaking, peeling) and then give up.

The best way of getting all the cell renewing benefits of retinol without the prescription-level side effects is to use an over-the counter version like Rodan + Fields ANTI-AGE Night Renewing Serum.

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is one of the most misunderstood ingredients in skincare. This organic compound, found in blueberries, cranberries and other fruits and vegetables, is the only FDA-approved way to lighten skin discolorations. And while it is available over-the-counter or with a prescription from your doctor, don’t book an appointment with your dermatologist just yet. The 4% by-prescription-only variety can be more irritating than the two percent found in OTC products, without guaranteeing better results. We find that 2% hydroquinone works extremely well when combined with exfoliation and sun protection.

Find 2% hydroquinone in Rodan + Fields REVERSE Skin Lightening Toner and REVERSE Skin Lightening Treatment.

Colorless Carotenoids

When it comes to antioxidants, carotenoids are king. These potent anti-aging antioxidants come in a colored form such as lycopene from tomatoes, making them perfect for products where a faint hint of rosy color is desired, and a clear form called colorless carotenoids which come from algae. These are particularly powerful because they don’t “die” after absorbing UV light; in fact, they have an endless capacity to absorb. This makes them perfect for use in facial sunscreens.

Find colorless carotenoids (called dunaliella salina extract on the ingredient list) in Rodan + Fields® ESSENTIALS Lip Shield SPF 25. And look for lycopene in Rodan + Fields ANTI-AGE Lip Renewing Serum.

Palmitoyl Oligopeptide

This peptide is clinically proven to smooth lips and reduce lip wrinkles, making it the perfect ingredient for maintaining youthful-looking skin and lips. Made up of proteins, our lips need extra help as we age to stay full and defined and so providing them with peptides (a building block of protein) is essential for maintaining and restoring their natural fullness and beauty.

Find palmitoyl oligopeptide in Rodan + Fields ESSENTIALS Lip Shield SPF 25 and in Rodan + Fields ANTI-AGE Lip Renewing Serum.

RF-Dcell

You moisturize daily anyway. Why not go beyond mere hydration to actually managing your skin’s cell proliferation? When skin cell renewal becomes too fast or too slow, your skin looks and feels unhealthy and your moisture barrier is unable to function as it should.

RF-Dcell is an RF exclusive ingredient that helps to regulate and normalize skin cell turnover, allowing only healthy mature cells to reach the surface when they’re fully ready to do their job.

Take your daily moisturizing to the maximum with the following products featuring RF-Dcell: ESSENTIALS Daily Body Moisturizer and Foaming Sunless Tan.

Fragrance

There’s really no such thing as fragrance-free. Even products without added fragrances still carry an odor. And while it’s true that some fragrances can be irritating, the right fragrance at the right level is one of the most powerful ways to influence a positive mood, create a good experience and increase product usage compliance.

To create the best possible product experience, we’ve made selecting fragrances for our products a science and an art, including safe, gentle low-level fragrances that experientially enhance your regimen and keep you looking and feeling great.

Glycerin

From handcrafted cleansers and cosmetics to high-end moisturizers, glycerin is considered a classic ingredient that delivers. A natural humectant used for centuries, glycerin draws in and helps retain moisture naturally, proving that new doesn’t always mean better.

That said, combining the time-tested moisturizing muscle of glycerin with cutting edge ingredient innovations can create all new products that pack a powerful punch when it comes to efficacy. Look for this old favorite in some new favorites like Rodan + Fields® SOOTHE Regimen for Sensitive, Irritated Skin and Facial Redness.

RFp3

Setting a new standard in ingredient multitasking, RFp3 is a Rodan + Fields exclusive designed to protect and correct on both the surface and at the source. RFp3 provides immediate and long-term redness relief as well as an unbeatable antimicrobial and antibacterial defense and skin barrier enhancement benefits.

RFp3

Life happens, and despite our best intentions and efforts, triggers can sneak through, causing physical and emotional stress which can manifest itself as skin that appears irritated or inflamed. RFp3, an exclusive combination of two peptides—Skin Soothing Peptide and Skin Detoxifying Peptide— and a protease inhibitor, stops the inflammatory cascade by interrupting the “domino” fall midstream.

Don’t let your appearance add to your stress, look for RFp3 in SOOTHE Sensitive Skin Treatment and ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides SPF 20.

RF COLD FISSION™

When your skin is dry, tight and uncomfortable, it is natural to reach for a moisturizer to relive the dryness and soothe your skin. However, most moisturizers derive their creamy, rich consistencies from emulsifiers such as PEG and stearic acid, which while fine for most people, can be problematic for sensitive skin. RF COLD FISSION™ is a patent-pending technology that utilizes a mechanical process, rather than emulsifiers, to create rich, hydrating, barrier-repairing moisturizers, making it the perfect partner for sensitive skin.

Now you can soothe and hydrate without irritation. You’ll find RF COLD FISSION™ technology in SOOTHE Moisture Replenishing Cream.

Peptides

Collagen and elastin, our skin’s structural proteins, are the foundation of the contours, fullness and smoothness that give our skin a healthy, youthful appearance. Our skin creates these proteins in abundance when we’re young, but beginning in our mid-twenties, production of these proteins decreases dramatically.

Your best bet to maintain healthy-looking skin is to counteract this production decrease by applying skincare with peptides which will stimulate natural production of collagen and elastin. When applied regularly to the face or hands, topical products containing peptides can help your skin look and feel fuller, stronger and smoother.

Find palmitoyl Oligopeptide to help to visibly restore volume, support resiliency and smooth and firm the appearance of crepey skin in Rodan + Fields® ANTI-AGE Age Shield Hand Balm SPF 30.

Ascorbic Acid

When it comes to keeping us healthy inside and out, vitamin C is a real multitasker. Taken orally,  it can prevent and treat the common cold. Topically, vitamin C (the pure version is called ascorbic acid) has proven skin-brightening and firming benefits, but delivering its full benefits to skin is challenging. So it’s anything but common to find ascorbic acid formulated for maximum benefit. So to get the most of this powerful anti-aging ingredient look for anhydrous (without water) formulations that maintain ascorbic acid’s stability and allow it to release its potency only upon application.

Find the skin-brightening and firming benefits of pure ascorbic acid in Rodan + Fields ANTI-AGE Age Shield Hand Balm SPF 30.

Hydroquinone

Uneven skin tones significantly age our appearance. In fact, discoloration is one of the key visual clues we pick up on when assessing a person’s age. For decreasing discolorations and increasing evenness, hydroquinone is the ingredient dermatologists prefer. It’s FDA recognized as safe and effective and works by blocking the enzyme responsible for causing excess pigmentation. Look for products containing two percent hydroquinone, the highest amount approved for over-the-counter products.

Find two percent hydroquinone in Rodan + Fields® REVERSE Skin Lightening Toner, REVERSE Skin Lightening Treatment and UNBLEMISH Spot Fading Toner.

RFp3

Achieving great skin takes time and a daily commitment. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a little instant gratification here and there. As you’re working to reverse summer sun damage and patiently waiting to see results, we recommend applying a skin-soothing and skin tone-evening agent like Rodan + Fields proprietary RFp3 to help mask dullness . RFp3 combines anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial peptides to interrupt the inflammatory cascade and decrease the appearance of discoloration instantly and over time.

Smooth away discoloration with RFp3 found in Rodan and Fields ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides and SOOTHE Sensitive Skin Treatment.

Ingredients of the Month

Benzoyl Peroxide

For good reason benzoyl peroxide has been considered a top acne antagonist for some time. Today it’s considered better than ever, thanks in large part to recent scientific studies further validating its acne fighting power as even more effective than oral antibiotics. Recent advances in formulations and delivery methods have even further increased its ability to treat and prevent acne.

For maximum efficacy, benzoyl peroxide does require a bit of delicate handling as far as formulas go. Most important is to keep the ingredient separate from other ingredients in the formula so it is stable prior to application on skin. Find stable benzoyl peroxide in Rodan + Fields® UNBLEMISH Dual Intensive Acne Treatment, which protects benzoyl peroxide in a dual-chamber delivery system to ensure optimal delivery.

Just remember, while benzoyl peroxide won’t bleach skin, it is an active ingredient and can bleach towels and pillowcases. Opt for white, or even better yet, look for a new line of bleach resistant towels now available at most stores.

Zincidone

Danger! Oil spill! If you’re acne prone, where there’s oil, there’s acne … so minimizing oil production and absorbing surface oils is essential to avoiding acne accidents and maintaining a clear complexion.

Zincidone, a mineral based ingredient, provides both benefits and should be included in any anti-acne regimen. In fact, in a recent clinical study, blot papers containing Zincidone immediately reduced surface oil by up to 84%, reduced oil production over time by up to 21%, and with consistent use reduced surface acne-causing bacterial growth.

Find Zincidone in Rodan + Fields® UNBLEMISH Blot Papers.
