What are some triggers of sensitive skin?

Seventy percent of Americans report having “sensitive skin”. A small percentage of sufferers have are genetically predisposed to having sensitive skin throughout their lives. The majority, however, acquire it from repeated exposure to environmental or lifestyle tripwires. Predisposition for sensitivity can make skin more vulnerable to the effects of stress, climate change, pollution, smoke, smog, sun exposure, friction or just plain old product overload. Even those whose skin is usually calm throughout the rest of the year frequently experience bouts of seasonal sensitivity during the dryer, harsher, winter months.

The SOOTHE Regimen helps to interrupt the inflammatory cascade, strengthens skin’s natural moisture barrier, calms redness and reduces irritation so that you can take comfort in having a healthy-looking, luminous complexion every day.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common condition in which the blood vessels of the skin dilate and constrict very easily in response to a whole variety of stimuli, including spicy food, alcohol, embarrassment, heat, sunlight and menopause. Women are more than three times as likely as men to exhibit it, although the symptoms are often more pronounced and severe in men. This chronic skin condition is characterized by intense and frequent flushing or blotchy redness, the appearance of broken blood vessels on the cheeks, chin and nose and, in some cases, acne-like pimples. Although there are no over-the-counter medicines approved for treating rosacea, choosing skincare products that are formulated for hyper-irritable skin may help keep skin calm and less likely to react adversely.

Common Questions

I’m concerned that the SOOTHE Moisture Replenishing Cream will be too much for my oily skin.

Because sensitive skin is often dry and irritated, the barrier function is weakened, which in turn causes the skin to become even more damaged. SOOTHE Moisture Replenishing Cream is formulated to nurture and protect sensitive reactive skin by replenishing skin’s natural moisturizing factors as it smoothes, hydrates and nourishes. However, if your skin is excessively oily, use SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash, apply Sensitive Skin Treatment and layer the Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 in the morning. Blot shine away with UNBLEMISH Blot Papers throughout the day. In the evening, cleanse with SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash, follow with Sensitive Skin Treatment and apply Moisture Replenishing Cream as the last step.

Will SOOTHE Moisture Replenishing Cream cause my skin to breakout?

Acne is triggered by stress, hormonal changes, mechanical friction, bacteria or a change in medications. SOOTHE is formulated for hyper-irritable skin to help calm and is less likely to react adversely to your skin, however, if your skin is prone to breakouts, refer to the Solution Tool to discover how the doctors combine the UNBLEMISH Regimen with the SOOTHE Regimen.

Common Questions

Can I apply ANTI-AGE Lip Renewing Serum around the outside of my lips?

ANTI-AGE Lip Renewing Serum is formulated specifically to treat the skin on the lips. For best results, do not use ANTI-AGE Lip Renewing Serum on your face.

I use ENHANCEMENTS Lip Micro-Dermabrasion.  How do I incorporate ANTI-AGE Lip Renewing Serum and ANTI-AGE AMP MD Roller?

Apply ENHANCEMENTS Lip Micro-Dermabrasion to the lips every morning to gently exfoliate and condition lips. We also suggest following with ESSENTIALS Lip Shield SPF 25 to protect lips from sun damage.  Then, in the evening, apply one ANTI-AGE Lip Renewing Serum capsule after rolling with ANTI- AGE AMP MD Roller.  ANTI-AGE Lip Renewing Serum helps lips retain natural moisturizing factors, smooths lip texture and reduces the appearance of lip wrinkles, and provides protective antioxidant benefits.  The result is fuller, firmer, smoother, hydrated and more defined looking lips.

Common Questions

I’ve tried hydroquinone prescriptions before and ended up with blotchy skin. Will this happen with the REVERSE Regimen?

Although prescription hydroquinone medication is effective, many times Customers are not satisfied with the results for the following reasons:

  • Some hydroquinone prescriptions are spot treatments and this will lighten the spot and surrounding areas to create a halo of lightness.
  • Prescription strength hydroquinone may result in skin irritation or dryness.
  • Formulations with prescription strength hydroquinone often have a very unpleasant smell and therefore people do not use enough.

The REVERSE Regimen is designed as a comprehensive treatment to reduce dullness and excessive dark marks and create radiant skin with even tone. It is more than just one ingredient—the REVERSE Regimen boosts the natural exfoliation process to prepare the skin for the next steps, lightens brown spots with hydroquinone, brightens the overall complexion and helps protect the skin with the right sunscreen. In addition, REVERSE Regimen is used on the entire face, not just for spot treatments, to even skin tone on your entire face.

All of these factors combined make the REVERSE Regimen very effective. Use the REVERSE Regimen as directed for best results. If you skip any one step in this process, you may not achieve your best results.

If you have been prescribed hydroquinone for specific dark areas on the face or hands, consult with your doctor on how to combine the REVERSE Regimen and the prescription hydroquinone. Please consult with your doctor if you have any questions regarding your prescription medication.

I’ve been doing a great job on my face, neck and décolleté but I just noticed that my hands are looking very old—wrinkled and plagued with dark spots. What should I use?

Hands can be a dead giveaway of your age, but if you’re like most people, you probably ignore them until the day you look down and notice brown spots, prominent vessels and thin, crepey skin.

Just like reversing the discolorations on your face, the key to successfully treating brown spots on your hands is a combination of exfoliation to lift off the dead cells, brightening and diligent sun protection. A good sunscreen that you apply frequently throughout the day, particularly after you wash your hands, is key. For a little extra protection, you might even consider wearing a pair of sexy driving gloves to block out the UV rays you receive in the car.

The Rodan + Fields ANTI-AGE Hand Treatment Regimen visibly brightens and evens skin tone, restores moisture content to improve elasticity and resiliency, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and crepey skin, for younger looking hands that won’t give away your age.

Common Questions

I wear an SPF 20 foundation makeup.  Is this enough sun protection?

Although including a sunscreen in the foundation is a good idea, this may not be adequate sun protection for several reasons.

1) Do you have the right kind of sunscreen? The Sunburn Protection Factor (SPF) indicates a product’s ability to reduce the effect of the UVB burning rays—the rays that signal us when we have had too much sun with redness, burning and stinging. However, SPFs do not guard against UVA aging rays that break down collagen and elastin, stimulate excess pigment, and damage cells leading to cancer. Ask if the sunscreen is broad-spectrum.

2) More important, are you using enough? For best protection, use a teaspoon for the face and an ounce for the body every morning and reapply every two to three hours when exposed to daylight. Not using enough broad-spectrum sunscreen often enough results in skin damage. At Rodan + Fields, we understand that it is difficult to reapply foundation several times a day for adequate coverage so we recommend beginning your day with a broad-spectrum sunscreen then layering your makeup over that. For a sunscreen on the go, we recommend the ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides SPF 20 which contains Zinc Oxide and Titanium that protect against most burning and aging rays.

My son is getting married in 10 weeks and my husband’s skin looks like an old leather shoe. How can I get his face back in shape so that he looks like the father –not grandfather of the groom?

Rodan + Fields REVERSE is a complete skincare system that combines prescription medicines at non-prescription strength with active cosmetic ingredients to repair and protect hyper-pigmented, sun-damaged skin. By combining the right ingredients, in the right formulations and in the right order, the regimen:

  • Lightens excessive darkness, brown spots and uneven pigment.
  • Brightens dull skin, improves tone and texture, and boosts skin’s radiance.
  • Exfoliates skin to remove complexion-dulling dead skin cells and smooth texture.
  • Protects against future sun damage with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen.

Over weeks to months, skin will look progressively more healthy and clear of dark marks.

Common Questions

I’m African American and at 54 I am noticing that my skin is lighter.  Is this normal?

As we age, we observe changes in the number and productivity of our melanocytes. We naturally lose melanocytes, thus diminishing the pigment-producing capacity of our skin. Our skin becomes lighter, less protected and sunburns more easily than it did in our youth. But these changes vary significantly from individual to individual and depend greatly on how we care for our skin.

Be sure to use your broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to help prevent skin damage from sun exposure. All of the Rodan + Fields sunscreens provide UVA and UVB sunscreen protection.

I have age spots and these tiny white dots on my skin. What are these and how can I make them go away?

From our very first day at the park, ultraviolet radiation causes melanocytes to become enlarged and overactive, particularly in fairer skinned individuals. Over time, this increased melanocyte activity causes the formation of brown spots, which we refer to as freckles in children and liver spots in the elderly. At the same time, chronic sun exposure may lead to total de-pigmentation due to destruction of melanocytes. The evidence of this is the appearance of white dots scattered most prominently on the forearm and chin.

Although you cannot do anything to reduce the white spots, you can address excessive pigmentation with Rodan + Fields REVERSE Regimen.

Common Questions

I was told that acne can stay with you for years—what changes should I expect to see as I get older?

As we age, pimples tend to move south on the face, with adults more commonly experiencing acne around the mouth and on the jawline, while teen acne tends to cluster on the forehead and cheeks. Overall, pimples on adults are fewer in number but bigger in size. Regardless of where you are breaking out, our UNBLEMISH Regimen is clinically proven to treat and help prevent the entire acne cycle. Use the regimen as directed at any age to help clear skin for a healthy, calm complexion.

My skin has really rough texture and pits following all those years of acne. I don’t break out any longer and want to know what to use to smooth my skin?

If your skin is free of acne, we recommend our ANTI-AGE AMP MD™ System and ANTI-AGE Regimen to help smooth texture, increase firmness, promote evenness of skin, and decrease the appearance of pores. However, if you are still experiencing breakouts, we suggest that you utilize the UNBLEMISH Regimen to address the complex issues associated with acne: red inflammation, excess oil and post-acne dark marks. Do not use ANTI-AGE AMP MD on active acne.
