Myth Busters: You Have to Suffer through Your Sunburn

A sunburn isn’t a punishment. It’s just your body’s way of protecting itself. If you suspect you have an impending burn, take two aspirin immediately to interrupt the inflammatory pathway that produces the signs and symptoms of a sunburn.
If you’re already inflamed, try a cold compress of a washcloth soaked in whole milk (the protein can help relieve discomfort), and follow with a soothing, calming lotion to reduce redness and prevent blistering and peeling. While this tried-and-true method has worked for us, there are countless others out there. What have you done to soothe a sunburn?

Take a lukewarm tea bath. Put 8-10 family size tea bags in the bath with luke warm water. the tannin in the tea is suppose to help relieve the burn. Maybe an old wives tale, but seems to help. You will need to have your spouse clean the brown tea stains out of the tub.
Also take tylenol.

A severe sunburn at the age of 12, following a long nap on the beach under overcast skies, resulted in head to toe blisters -some serious burns. My parents, who obiously didn’t realize the danger of the sun’s rays coming through the clouds, literally went stratight over to a live aloe plan, cut off some “leaves”, slit them open, and laid them all over my poor little burned up body. They then decided to buy me a sun hat. Lessons learned the hard way… I had scars on my legs for months following that nasty burn! We are blessed with the knowledge of the serious danger of UV rays today and can better protect our own children and grandchildren.

Take as hot a shower as possible. It will hurt but it takes the sting and the heat out.

It seems only natural, but I have applied Soothe #3 on my beet-like face and the next morning most all redness was gone except for a few edges that i may have missed. This last weekend I applied Soothe to my niece’s red forehead and it was normal in the morning.
The cooling washcloth is good! For small burns, I have found that holding ice to the burn causes still-damaging heat to leave the skin and reduce the burn greatly; at times leaving no blister or mark.
